Assessment and Grading:

Students will have a variety of assessments which may include tests, quizzes (both traditional and SmartResponse), essays, oral readings and recitations, projects, and homework assignments related to class topics.  These assessments will be worth a varying amount of points, and the term grade will be determined by the percentage of total points earned out of the total points possible.

Midterm Exam:  10% of second quarter grade
Final Exam:  10% of fourth quarter grade (not applicable for Seniors)

The term grade is intended to be a fair, objective assessment of a student's proficiency with skills and content learned during the term, and therefore the grade is based on performances of understanding (tests, projects, homework, in-class activities, ongoing assessments) that reflect what the student knows and is able to do in his/her current level of Latin. Factors such as conduct, effort, participation, and preparation are not graded per se but are essential ingredients for success. Comments about conduct, effort, participation, and preparation will be shared with students and parents via personal conversations, email, progress reports, the online gradebook, report card comments, etc.

Homework Assessment
Each assignment is worth a potential 5 points.
  • A score of 5 will be credited to work that is on time, complete, neat, reflects good effort and thoughtfulness, shows that the student has referred to resources such as notes, textbook, and a glossary/dictionary when necessary, and shows adequate corrections (if we have gone over the assignment in class).
  • Scores of 4, 3, 2, 1 will be credited to work that is either incomplete, done with insufficient effort, partially illegible, unacceptably messy, shows inadequate corrections (if we have gone over the assignment in class), or is otherwise lacking in quality.
  • A score of 0 (no credit) will be given when homework is not turned in, is done at inappropriate times (such as during a lesson or in another teacher's class), and in cases when it is demonstrably not the student's own work / not the result of the student's own thinking.
