General | Supplies | Expectations | Grading Policy | Getting Help

  • Homework and Study: Homework will be assigned most days (about 20-25 per term). Students will have the opportunity to make corrections in class, after which they will hand it in for a score (see grading policy), and will then be kept on file in the classroom until the end of the term. As with any foreign language, Latin requires rigorous study and practice outside of class. Students should spend time every day re-reading passages we have read as well as reviewing vocabulary, grammar, and any other notes from class.

  • Tests: A test will be given at the end of each chapter/unit (about 6-8 per term). Students will always be notified of tests in advance.

  • Test Retakes: Requests to retake a test will be handled on a case-by-case basis, and any retakes must be completed within a time frame determined by the teacher (generally always within one week of the original test date). The student should be prepared to explain why he/she is requesting a retake and why he/she thinks it should be permitted. A request for a retake is more likely to be granted if a student has shown evidence of studying, has exhibited good class participation and willingness to learn, has completed assignments on time, and has sought extra help as soon as he/she began having difficulty with the material. The score of a retake will generally be averaged with the original test score except in special circumstances.

  • Ongoing Assessments: Most days (but not on days when a test is given), a short (5-10 minute) written assessment will be given.  No specific notice will be given in advance of these assessments.  The purpose of this is for both the students and the teacher to see an ongoing record of their day-to-day proficiency with current and cumulative skills and content.  These assessments may consist of material from the previous night's homework/study, synthesis of materials from previous lessons, or a task such as filling out a grammatical chart or a verb synopsis.  These will be counted in the "Quiz/Short Assessment" category, worth 30% of the term grade.

  • Missing/Late Work: Students are required to complete all missed coursework.  Any missing work will be expected to be turned in within one class period and, on a case-by-case basis, may be given reduced credit.  Work that is more than one day late will receive zero credit but still must be done; this will be treated as a discipline issue, and the student will be assigned a detention during which the student will complete the work under teacher supervision.  Failure to complete all coursework can result in a student not learning to his/her potential, jeopardizing the student's proficiency level and reducing his/her performance on assessments.

  • Absences: Please be familiar with the school-wide policies on absences (see student handbook). If a student is absent, he/she should call a responsible classmate or email me to find out what was missed. The student must check in with me upon returning to school. If a student is absent on the day of a test or on the day an assignment is due, he/she should be prepared to make up the test or turn in the assignment on the day he/she returns to school. Students who are absent for an extended number of days should see me upon returning to school to arrange a schedule for making up missed work promptly.

  • Leaving the Room: Since leaving the room can disrupt the flow of class and can result in students missing information or instructions, trips out of the room should be rare and limited to when it is absolutely necessary. Students must ask permission (in Latin), sign out, and take a pass when leaving the room. Frequent requests to leave the room, unless for excused medical reasons, will result in loss of privileges and/or parent contact.  Students may not leave the room during tests/assessments.

  • Food and Drink: Students are welcome to bring bottled water to class provided that it has a cap and they are careful not to spill it. No other food, drink, candy, or gum is allowed unless it is part of a class activity or unless specific permission is given.

  • Textbook Care: Each student will be issued a textbook at the beginning of the year and will be responsible for keeping it covered at all times and returning it at the end of the year in the same condition, with allowances made for normal, reasonable wear and tear. (Reasonable wear and tear does not include: drawing, writing, or otherwise marking up the textbook; folding or dog-earing pages; torn out pages/torn off covers; damage that occurs from not keeping the book covered; other damage such as from food or beverage spills or from being buried awkwardly in a locker).

  • Textbook Purchase Information: If you wish to purchase a second copy of the textbook to keep at home, or if you need to replace a lost or damaged book, you can order copies directly from the publisher. Please contact me for information.
